Where are the Smeatons?
Kirk Smeaton and Little Smeaton are located in the southernmost tip of North Yorkshire, within a few hundred yards of the boundary with South Yorkshire, and within 2 miles of the boundary with West Yorkshire. It is easily accessible by road, being situated just two miles east of Wentbridge on the A1 and just four miles south of the M62 / A1 junction. See the location map below.
The area has connections with Robin Hood, who supposedly frequented this area, and also with Charlotte Bronte, who married a Curate from the village.
St. Peters Church in Kirk Smeaton is listed as being of special architectural and historic interest and dates back to the 11th Century. The church serves the twin villages of Kirk Smeaton and Little Smeaton, which lie on opposite sides of the River Went.
The two villages have a population of approximately 550.
